During my time at KATU I wrote thousands of stories on very tight deadlines. I extensively covered breaking news, crime, schools, business, state and local politics. I wrote hundreds of un-bylined daily stories, plus scores of longer pieces either independently or with other reporters. Here are a few examples:
Oregon Ducks investigation:
Reporter Dan Tilkin and I spent months filing public records requests and pressuring the University of Oregon for information about the NCAA investigation into recruiting practices by the school’s football team. We leveraged public records law to break several key elements of the story.
- Ducks, NCAA agree on many ‘major’ violations; UO proposes probation (KATU broke this story)
- Ducks avoid worst penalties, face lost scholarship and probation
- Ducks release investigation docs that are almost all redacted
Other stories:
- App-based car service wants in Portland, but city code stands in the way
- State rep: It’s ‘outrageous’ that Portland school still has seclusion room
- Child sex exploitation: Study shows extent of the problem in Portland
Stories written on tight deadlines:
- Video shows gun battle between trooper and suspect
- Rasheed Wallace still owes Multnomah County after failed payment attempt
- Author Reza Aslan speaks in Portland after controversial Fox interview
